Description

KWL Chart Graphic Organiser Templates are a versatile and easy-to-use resource that supports student thinking across all learning areas. Based on the familiar “Know – Want to Know – Learned” model, these templates encourage students to activate prior knowledge, set learning goals and reflect on new information, making them a valuable tool for building metacognitive and comprehension skills.

This resource is designed to adapt to your classroom needs. With editable text boxes, you can customise the chart for any topic, subject or age group. Whether you're exploring a new science unit, diving into a history inquiry, or unpacking a class novel, the KWL format helps structure and scaffold learning in a purposeful way. It’s also an excellent formative assessment tool, allowing teachers to monitor student understanding and adjust instruction accordingly.

Included are two layout versions to choose from, each with three formatting options: blank boxes for open responses, 12mm lines for early writers, and 9mm lines for more advanced students. This flexibility makes it easy to cater to a range of abilities and year levels, from Foundation through to upper primary.

KWL charts can be used at the start of a unit to tap into prior knowledge, revisited during learning to track progress, and completed at the end to consolidate understanding. They work well in individual student workbooks, in learning portfolios, or as collaborative group tasks when enlarged to A3 or displayed on a classroom wall.
