Measurement Task Cards: At the Zoo is a hands-on and engaging way for students to practise their ability to measure using informal units. Students will be challenged to use an informal unit of measurement to measure a series of images, recording the measurements on the included recording sheet. This activity is suitable for individuals or small groups. Each student will need a recording sheet and access to the task cards. Students will work through the task cards, recording their measurements on the recording sheet. Students will use Unifix cubes or another informal unit of measurement to measure the images, such as MAB blocks, counter or paperclips. Extend students’ learning by having them compare and order the measurements. Alternatively, have each student in the small group use a different unit of measure. This is sure to generate an interesting discussion! It’s time to get measuring!
