This set of task cards provides students with the opportunity to practise identifying, matching and writing numbers 1-5 in a fun and hands-on way. Print and cut the Monster Subitising task cards and card templates, print copies of the relevant recording sheets, grab some baking trays and add rice…and you are ready to go!

This versatile resource is perfect for individual, partner or small group work. Play in the following ways:

1. Flip and Trace: Start with a tray of rice and subitising number cards face down around it. Students will flip a number card over. They will trace that number in the rice. They can then trace the number on their recording sheet.
2. Match and Colour: Start with all the number cards mixed and facing up. Students will match the number cards. Once matched, they can colour the number on their recording sheet.
3. Find and Colour: Start with a tray that has number cards hidden beneath the rice. Students will need to find a card hidden in the rice and push the rice to reveal the card. They can then colour that number on their recording sheet.

Using rice provides an additional element of fun as well as a sensory and fine motor experience your students are sure to love. We recommend dying the rice for a colourful experience. Alternatively, use sprinkles or sand.
