Our Moral Brainstorm activity is the perfect choice to help your students recognise that narratives are used for the purpose of entertaining the reader and teaching them valuable lessons. It is important for students to understand that authors use characters to deliver these important messages through their thoughts, words and actions.

The morals featured in the Moral Brainstorm resource include:

• Perseverance: Never allow challenges to deter you from achieving your goals.
• Friendship: Treat others with respect, kindness, loyalty, and understanding.
• Self-Acceptance: Be true to yourself and embrace the things that make you unique.

We recommend enlarging the Moral Brainstorm template to A3 so students can complete the task in small groups. They will brainstorm ways the moral in the centre of the page could be taught in a narrative. Students must consider how a character could deliver the message through their thoughts, words and actions. Encourage them to draw upon fiction elements from texts they are familiar with and use these to create new story ideas.

Students can either write their ideas on the template using different coloured pens or on sticky notes that can be added to the page. If time allows, bring the students together and have them share their story ideas with the class!
