Our Mysterious Meanings activity provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of literal and inferred meaning in the context of a familiar story. The science of reading has proven that teaching semantics concepts, such as figurative language, helps students to become more effective readers, especially when presented with challenging or complex texts.
Students will locate and record a series of figurative language quotes from their set text, and draw pictures to represent their literal and implied meanings. We recommend that students have access to the set text to read the quote in context, especially before drawing the implied meaning picture.
