Over the course of this 5-lesson narrative writing unit, students will complete a variety of purposeful and engaging tasks that are aligned to the Year 3 Australian English Curriculum and are ideal to complete as a part of your Writing Program in preparation for NAPLAN. The unit is designed to develop students’ proficiency in planning, creating and editing imaginative texts through the exploration of narrative features, structure and conventions.​ Please note that this unit of work is also suitable for use with Year 2 students.

By the end of this unit of work, students will identify the purpose and audience of a narrative and describe its features, including plot, characters and setting. They will recognise the structure of a narrative, including its orientation, complication, sequence of events and resolution. Students will identify the conventions commonly found in narrative texts and recognise their purpose. They will apply knowledge of narrative structure, features and conventions to write an improved version of a familiar narrative. To conclude the unit, students will complete a written assessment where they apply their knowledge of narrative structure, features and conventions to compose an adaptation of a familiar fairy tale.
