National Sorry Day is commemorated on the 26th May every year in recognition of the pain and suffering experienced by those Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples who were forcibly removed from their families under Australian Government laws from the 1800’s and the 1970’s.
The five-petal ‘Native Desert Rose’ was chosen by members of the Stolen Generation to symbolise the scattering of its members throughout Australia and also for its resilience and survivor instinct. It is found widely across Australia, and its colour denotes compassion and spiritual healing.
This resource allows students to create their own Desert Rose to display as an act of acknowledgement on Sorry Day.
