Description
Students correctly answer questions to reach the top of the mountain. How far will they make it up? As players climb, the scenery shifts through forests, snowy peaks and rocky cliffs. At the end, a polaroid snapshot captures their final height and score, celebrating the progress they’ve made together.
This is a cooperative game where students work as a team to reach the summit. Whether playing solo or with others, each correct answer helps push the group closer to the top. The challenge promotes perseverance, communication and a shared goal of answering all questions accurately.
This version focuses on recognising the patterns that occur when adding and subtracting odd and even numbers. Students determine whether a sum will be odd or even based on the types of numbers involved. With each correct answer, they progress along the trail and strengthen their understanding of number properties and relationships.
Key Learning Outcomes:
- ✅ Identify and describe the outcomes of adding and subtracting odd and even numbers
- ✅ Apply number properties to predict whether a result will be odd or even
- ✅ Build fluency in mental computation and number pattern recognition
- ✅ Strengthen mathematical reasoning through interactive gameplay
- ✅ Collaborate to achieve a shared goal in a cooperative maths challenge
How to Play:
- Students are shown a number sentence and must decide whether the answer will be odd or even.
- They select their answer from two options and receive immediate feedback.
- Each correct answer moves them further up the mountain trail.
- If playing with multiple students, everyone must agree before locking in their response.
- At the end, a photo snapshot shows how far they climbed and how well they understood the concept.
Ideas for Classroom Use:
- 💡 Use during lessons on number properties and addition/subtraction strategies
- 💡 Ideal for Year 2–5 students exploring patterns in number operations
- 💡 Great for maths rotations, small group work or collaborative whole-class challenges
- 💡 Replay to build confidence and reinforce understanding of odd and even number rules
Top Teacher Tips:
- 💛 Let students personalise their experience by choosing from six characters before the hike begins
- 💛 Use team mode for group collaboration or select individual play to support fluency practise
- 💛 Send the QR code home to allow students to continue building number skills independently
Let’s Hike – Odd or Even? Rules for Addition & Subtraction helps students explore patterns in numbers while climbing together toward a common goal.
