Description
Help students strengthen their phonemic awareness and early literacy skills with this fun and interactive Easter-themed activity. By selecting and combining onset and rime from colourful Easter eggs, students will have a hands-on way to practise decoding words while engaging in a playful learning experience.
How to Complete
Once the beginning sound and word family eggs have been printed on thick card and cut out, simply provide each student with a recording sheet and you are ready to use the activity in one of the following ways:
Option 1
- Students will select an Easter egg from each category (beginning sounds and word families) and put them together to make a word.
- They will need to read the word and determine if the word is real or not.
- Students can record any real words they make on the recording sheet.
Option 2
- Provide each student with one word family egg and have them see how many beginning sound eggs can be added to create real words.
- Students can record any real words they make on the recording sheet.
Option 3
- Provide each student with one beginning sound egg and have them see how many word family eggs can be added to create real words.
- Students can record any real words they make on the recording sheet.
Option 4
- Use the eggs as flash cards. Have an adult helper hold two cards up at a time for students to sound out and blend.
Additional Tips
- After cutting out the eggs, place them in separate bowls, bags or piles, ready for students to use.
- Use write and wipe sleeves with dry erase markers to make the recording sheets reusable.
- Print the recording sheet with word boxes so students can decorate and colour their eggs without covering their writing!
Extension Ideas
- Rhyme Hunt: After forming a real word, have students list additional words that rhyme with it.
- Silly Sentence Challenge: Have students write a silly sentence using one of their real words.
Designed to reinforce early reading and word building skills, this resource encourages students to blend sounds and differentiate between real and nonsense words during the lead up to Easter.
