Description

The Ordering Decimals: Tenths & Hundredths Activity is a collaborative, hands-on task designed to help students practise comparing and sequencing decimals. Working in groups, students will develop their understanding of decimal place value by accurately placing decimals in order and explaining their reasoning using correct mathematical language. This engaging activity encourages peer discussion, critical thinking, and active learning.

How to Complete:

  1. Groups of students will work together to arrange themselves in ascending order based on the decimal cards they are holding (this should include a combination of tenths and hundredths). Encourage them to explain their reasoning using correct terminology.
  2. Once a group is confident in their order, they should read the decimals aloud for the teacher or another group to check.
  3. Conclude the activity with a class discussion about the strategies students used to compare the decimals and the importance of focusing on the tenths and hundredths places.

Additional Tips:

  1. For students who need extra support, provide a place value chart to help them compare tenths and hundredths.
  2. Use this activity as an opportunity to reinforce the concept that decimals can have different representations, such as 0.4 is the same as 0.40.
  3. Encourage students to explain their reasoning aloud to strengthen their understanding of decimal equivalence and place value.

Extension Ideas:

  1. Time Challenge: Once students are confident, turn it into a timed activity where groups race to correctly order their decimals.
  2. Decimal Creation: Ask students to create their own decimal cards and challenge another group to order them.
  3. Real-Life Connections: Discuss real-world contexts where comparing decimals is important, such as race times in a sporting event.
