Perimeter Problems LET’S HIKE
Description
Lace up your boots for a perimeter adventure! In this collaborative digital game, students climb a scenic mountain trail by solving a series of real-world perimeter problems. As they answer correctly, they move higher up the mountain—watching the scenery change from grassy foothills to snowy peaks.
Each question requires students to calculate the perimeter of shapes or objects using appropriate metric units, including millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), and metres (m). Questions are set in practical contexts to help students make meaningful connections between measurement and everyday situations.
At the end of the hike, students are shown a polaroid-style snapshot of how far they climbed and their final score—motivating them to replay and reach new heights as a team.
Key Learning Outcomes:
- ✅ Solve practical perimeter problems using metric units
- ✅ Apply understanding of mm, cm, and m in context
- ✅ Strengthen addition and measurement fluency
- ✅ Develop problem-solving and reasoning skills
- ✅ Engage in cooperative learning with shared goals and progress
How to Play:
- Students are presented with a perimeter word problem involving real-world objects or shapes.
- Each correct answer helps move the player or team further up the mountain trail.
- Some trail segments may require more than one correct answer to complete.
- The game can be played individually or in a group, with everyone working toward the same summit.
- At the end, students receive a polaroid-style snapshot showing their score and how far they climbed.
Ideas for Classroom Use:
- 💡 Use during perimeter lessons to apply knowledge in everyday contexts
- 💡 Ideal for Years 4–6 students needing practise with multi-step problems
- 💡 Add to maths rotations for collaborative, visual learning opportunities
- 💡 Pair with outdoor measuring tasks to connect digital and real-world applications
Top Teacher Tips:
- 💛 Let students personalise their experience by choosing from six characters before the game begins
- 💛 Select the number of players or teams at the start of the game to suit individual, paired, or group play
- 💛 Send the QR code home for students to play as a homework or revision task
Let’s Hike – Perimeter Problems transforms practical maths into a cooperative mountain challenge that encourages teamwork, resilience, and real-world understanding.
