This engaging Christmas-themed game has been designed to accompany a whole class reading of the picture book Pete the Cat Saves Christmas by Eric Litwin. Use this activity to help your students develop their understanding of the cause and effect comprehension strategy.

Using bold clipart, our Christmas Cause & Effect game will undoubtedly attract the attention of your students as they demonstrate their ability to apply context clues and prior knowledge to match causes and their effects. Students will need to read the sentences on the game cards. Each card includes a sentence and matching image. If they have a matching effect on their game board, they can place a counter on top of it (please note that some causes could match with more than one effect and vice versa). Encourage students to justify their choices. The first student to cover each image on their game board is the winner of the game. You may also wish to print the optional recording sheet to document students’ understanding of the cause and effect comprehension strategy.

Once the resource has been printed and game cards cut out, Christmas Cause & Effect game is ready to be played. We recommend printing the game boards and cards on thick card for durability. Younger students may benefit from having the resource enlarged to A3 and an adult to support them in reading the sentences on the cards and game boards.
