This purposeful Christmas-themed activity has been designed to accompany a whole class reading of the picture book Pete the Cat Saves Christmas by Eric Litwin. These no-prep worksheets will allow you to check your students’ ability to generate rhyming words and use them to compose a song.   Inspired by the song Pete sings in the story, students will brainstorm words related to Christmas and its themes. They will select four of these words and generate rhyming words which will be used to create a Christmas-themed song (or poem). In addition to the planning page, we have included multiple writing templates to suit the needs of your class:

1. Compose the song on a page that includes 18mm lines and space to draw a picture.
2. Compose the song on a page that includes 18mm lines only. This would be ideal for students who are motivated to write a longer song.
3. Compose the song on a blank page, either by adding words and/or pictures.

  Encourage your students to consider how they can write a song that is not only Christmas-themed but also relevant for a cat to sing!   This task is perfect for independent work, a small group task, scribing, evidence for assessment or for a relief folder!
