Physical Sciences Year 2 Assessment: Muffling Sound

Description
Support your Year 2 students in their Physical Sciences: Investigating Sound unit of work with this hands-on and engaging assessment task.
Created to coincide with the Year 2 Physical Sciences Australian Curriculum, this investigation will provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of concepts related to sound, in particular, investigating which materials best muffle sound (AC9S2U02).
Students will predict and investigate which material muffles sound the best. During the investigation, students will apply various Science Inquiry skills, including developing inquiry questions, making predictions, displaying practices for conducting a safe investigation, making observations, recording data and drawing conclusions.
This resource includes templates for students to record an inquiry question, prediction, equipment, procedure, observations, data and concluding thoughts. For more information on how to conduct this investigation, simply refer to Slides 99-111 of our Investigating Sound PowerPoint (included in the Physical Sciences Year 2 UNIT PLAN download).
Teachers can assess this task using the included It’s Too Loud: Muffling Sounds Investigation Assessment Rubric. Prefilled and blank versions of this document have been provided.
