Description

You’ve reached the tomb, and it’s time to get the treasure! Every correct answer gives you the chance to grab more loot—but will you play it safe or risk it all for a bigger prize? One wrong move and your treasure could disappear through the trapdoor!

In this version, students examine a series of images and choose the correct positional language to complete each sentence. From “The apple is ___ the basket” to “The toy is ___ the chair,” students practise using words like above, beside, under, between, and behind—building foundational understanding of spatial relationships through visual prompts.

Let’s Steal – Positional Language is perfect for Foundation to Year 2 students developing their vocabulary for describing position and direction. Use it during your measurement and geometry unit, in literacy rotations, or as a fast-paced independent activity using the QR code.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Use and understand positional language in everyday contexts
  • ✅ Identify spatial relationships using words like above, below, beside, and between
  • ✅ Strengthen visual reasoning and spatial awareness
  • ✅ Build early geometry vocabulary through image-based tasks
  • ✅ Engage in risk-and-reward gameplay that reinforces concept mastery

How to Play:

  1. Students are shown an image with an incomplete sentence about position.
  2. They choose the correct positional word to complete the sentence accurately.
  3. A correct answer earns treasure—but they must decide to bank it or risk it for a bigger reward.
  4. Incorrect answers after choosing to risk result in losing any unbanked treasure.
  5. The game continues until all questions are answered. The player with the most banked treasure wins!

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use as part of a geometry or literacy unit focused on positional vocabulary
  • 💡 Great for Foundation–Year 2 students needing extra practise with spatial language
  • 💡 Pair with a hands-on activity using toys or classroom objects to model positions
  • 💡 Follow up with drawing or writing tasks where students describe positions using key terms

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Let students personalise their experience by choosing from six characters before the game begins
  • 💛 Select the number of players or teams at the start of the game to suit individual, paired, or group play
  • 💛 Send the QR code home for students to play as a homework or revision task

Let’s Steal – Positional Language brings directional vocabulary to life through an exciting treasure hunt—where every correct answer is a step closer to gold!
