Description

Predicting: General Comprehension Worksheets is a flexible, strategy-based resource designed to support students in developing prediction skills before, during and after reading. Aligned with key comprehension strategies, this worksheet set encourages students to think critically about texts and use clues from both textual and visual elements to anticipate what might happen next.

This resource can be used with any text or text type, making it an excellent tool for guided reading, literacy rotations or independent comprehension tasks. Students begin by using external text cues—such as the title, cover, images or blurb—to form initial predictions. As they read, they pause at key points to consider how the text is unfolding and to adjust or confirm their ideas. After completing the text, they reflect on their earlier predictions to evaluate their accuracy and identify supporting evidence they may have missed.

By following this before-during-after structure, students are guided to engage deeply with the reading process, refining their inferential thinking and improving their ability to justify and reflect on their ideas. This cyclical approach to prediction helps strengthen comprehension across a wide range of genres, text complexities and reading abilities.

The worksheets come in three layout options to support a variety of student needs: blank templates, 12mm-lined versions, and 9mm-lined versions. All options are available in both PDF and fully editable formats, providing flexibility for teachers to customise them for class novels, reading groups or differentiated tasks. Whether printed for individual or pair work, or enlarged for whole-class modelling, this resource makes comprehension instruction practical and meaningful.
