Your students will love the challenge of playing Prefix & Suffix Treasure! This resource requires students to build upon base words with a range of prefixes and suffixes and collect gems along the way in a fast-paced board game format.

As students move around the game board, they will land on a prefix or suffix. They will look at the words on their base word board to see if they can use any of them with the affix. If they can build a word, they cover the base word with a counter, record it on the recording sheet and collect a gem!

This versatile game can be played with partners or up to six players. The infinity-style game board means that students can start the game almost anywhere on the game board and play the game in a variety of ways. Students can choose to build words by following the figure-eight loop, or alternatively, they can circle around one side of the game board, focusing on one type of affix until they are ready to cross over. Ensure that your students understand that the ‘-en-‘ affix in the central diamond can be used as a prefix or a suffix.

This resource includes instructions, a game board, six base word boards, gems and a recording sheet. We recommend printing and cutting at least four pages of gems, especially if you plan to have six players joining the game. To assist students who are unsure about following the infinity loop, we have included a version of the game with arrows that point them in the right direction.

For best results, we recommend printing the Prefix & Suffix Treasure Game Board onto thick A3 cardstock. We have included high and low-colour Base Word Board options, which can be printed onto thick A4 cardstock. If you wish to reuse the gems, printing them onto thick cardstock will make them more durable. We have also included two black-and-white versions of the recording sheet that can be retained as evidence of your students’ learning. You can choose between the version with space for recording words only or the version that also allows your students to record the number of gems they have collected by the end of the game.
