Description

This Science of Reading aligned resource is an engaging, fast-paced game that students will love! One at a time, students will attempt to read as many words as they can in a minute. They will record their responses on the tally sheet. The student who read the most words in the time will be able to move four spaces on the racetrack, while the remaining students will get to move three, two and one place(s) depending on how many words they read. Students continue the process until someone makes it to the finishing line! This game is a great way to consolidate your students’ understanding of grapheme-phoneme correspondences. It will help your students with decoding high-frequency words (Flash Words) and will also assist in developing their automaticity in this area so they can read these words 'in a flash'. The words used in this pack have been placed into categories, such as VC, Consonant Digraphs, Split Digraphs, so as you explicitly teach phonics you will be able to provide students with opportunities to build their understanding in these areas. What are Flash Words? They are similar to Heart Words in that they are words that students will frequently read. They differ because many Flash Words have temporary ‘tricky parts’ which follow regular spelling patterns. This means that as students learn more about the relationship between graphemes and phonemes, they will be able to decode these words. Our ultimate members can access an editable version of the flash word playing cards here. Digraphs and split digraphs have been underlined to help students.
