Description

If you’re looking for an engaging activity that will develop your students’ ability to subitise numbers to 5, Race & Count is the game for you!

Students will love racing around the track and subitising numbers from 1 to 5 along the way! This game can be played with the printable race track or a suitable alternative, such as a toy race track (these can often be found in shops, such as Kmart and Target). In addition to the printable race track pieces, this amazing resource includes:

  1. Detailed instructions.
  2. Cute car playing pieces x8 (alternatively, use toy cars).
  3. Eye-catching game cards x40 (in high and low colour options). We have included images of blocks, fingers, dice, five frames and pop sticks for students to subitise.
  4. Start and finish line signs (we recommend placing these in double sided photo frame stands, such as those that can be purchased at Ikea).

The aim of the game is for students to identify the numbers on the game cards as they move along the track. Prior to students playing, we recommend placing counters along the track to indicate the spaces students can move as they roll the dice and placing piles of game cards face down in intervals along the track. No time to put out the counters? Simply place individual game cards face down along the track for students to land on and flip.

Students will take turns to roll the die and move along the track. When a student reaches a pile of cards, they will stop, select a card and look at the image and the two digits below. They will subitise the number that is represented by the image and point to the matching digit. Have them say the subitised number aloud. If students are not able to read digits, simply have them subitise the number that is represented by the image. If the student is unable to subitise the number, they miss a turn. The first student to reach the finish line is the winner. Alternatively, give students a target number of laps to complete.

To extend your students, have them identify the number that is one more or one less than the image!

We recommend printing all resources on thick card for longevity. In addition to the printable resource, counters and dice are required.
