Description

This Science of Reading resource is the perfect way to consolidate your students’ understanding of grapheme-phoneme correspondences. This game will help your students with decoding high-frequency words (Flash Words) and will also assist in developing their automaticity in this area so they can read these words in a flash. What are Flash Words? They are similar to Heart Words in that they are words that students will frequently read. They differ because many Flash Words have temporary ‘tricky parts’ which follow regular spelling patterns. As students learn more about the relationship between graphemes and phonemes, they will be able to decode these words. The words used in this pack have been placed into categories, such as VC, Consonant Digraphs, Split Digraphs, so as you explicitly teach phonics you will be able to provide students with opportunities to build their understanding in these areas. Each category has its own board, so you can easily pick and choose boards based on the needs of your students. In this game, students will work in pairs. One student will be the timekeeper and the other will aim to read all the words on the board as quickly as possible. Students will record their data on a sheet, so they can work on beating their own time throughout the week!
