Description

This fun Mother’s Day activity allows students to express their love and appreciation in a creative and meaningful way. Using the concept of a recipe, students will list the essential ‘ingredients’ that make their mum or caregiver so special. They can then decorate an apron template with symbols and colours to reflect their mum and attach the recipe to the base. The completed craft makes a vibrant classroom display and a thoughtful Mother’s Day gift.

How to Complete

This resource is editable, so you can adjust the text to suit your students’ needs. We recommend printing the recipe template on white A4 card. Enlarge the apron template to A3 and print on coloured card (or on white card if students will be painting them). In addition to the printable elements, we recommend having ribbon, paint and craft materials on hand.

  1. As a class, brainstorm the ‘ingredients’ required to make a great mother or caregiver. Write these on the board for students to refer to during the activity.
  2. Students complete their recipe card, writing the key ‘ingredients’ and drawing a picture of their mum in the space provided.
  3. Provide each student with an apron template to paint and decorate with pictures and symbols that reflect their mother or caregiver. Craft materials, such as pom poms, sequins and stickers, will add some extra flair to their creations.
  4. Once dry, students glue their recipe to the base of the apron.
  5. Attach ribbon to the top of the apron and tie in a bow so it can be hung up at home!

Additional Tips

  1. To make a smaller version, print the aprons on A4 and reduce the recipe cards to A5.
  2. Younger students may require an adult to scribe their ‘ingredients’.
  3. If printing the aprons on brightly coloured card, allow students to paint their hands with white paint to create a handprint design.
  4. Invite mothers and caregivers to send in photos of themselves with their child. Students can use these to create a photo collage on the apron.

This activity combines literacy, creativity, and heartfelt appreciation - making it a perfect addition to your Mother’s Day celebrations.
