Description

Reconciliation Week is held annually from May 27 to June 3, immediately after National Sorry Day. It aims to promote the inclusivity of all our nation's peoples and celebrate the culture of our First Nations people.

This year's theme for Reconciliation Week is ‘Bridging Now to Next’. This engaging worksheet supports critical thinking while celebrating growth, cultural understanding and the importance of creating a better future together. Through drawing and writing, students are guided to consider how an aspect of their life has evolved over time and how they hope to see these changes continue into the future. To help students understand the theme of reconciliation, the topics they focus on should be relatable and could be based on relationships, culture, education, language or the environment.

How to Complete

  1. Begin with a class discussion about how things evolve over time, linking this discussion to reconciliation and how the actions of today can impact tomorrow.
  2. Help students select a familiar topic that has evolved over time, such friendships or the local environment.
  3. In each of the sections on the worksheet, encourage students to illustrate their topic in the past, present and how they hope it will be in the future.

Additional Tips

  1. Model the process by completing a shared class example before beginning individual work.
  2. Choose the line size (24mm, 18mm, or 14mm) that is most suitable for your cohort of students.
  3. If additional writing or drawing space is required, enlarge the template to A3 size.
  4. Scribe written components for younger students who may require additional support.

Extension Ideas

  1. Classroom Display: Create a collaborative classroom display with the completed worksheets.
  2. First Nations Perspective: Invite First Nations peoples to speak to your class about their personal experiences or what reconciliation means to them.

This activity supports visual literacy, sequencing, and early writing skills, while fostering empathy and understanding around reconciliation. It contains exclusive drawings created by Ryhia Dank from Nardurna.
