Description

This set of worksheets helps students develop their understanding of decimals by practising how to identify and rename tenths and hundredths. Through various tasks such as completing tables, interpreting shaded grids, and reading decimals on a number line, students will build their confidence in recognising decimal equivalence and understanding the relationship between tenths and hundredths.

How to Complete:

  1. Section 1: Convert the Decimals

Students convert decimal numbers to both tenths and hundredths.

  1. Section 2: Rename the Decimals

Students rename decimals in two forms.

  1. Section 3: Interpret the Decimal Grids

Students count the number of shaded parts on the grid and write the corresponding decimal in hundredths.

  1. Section 4: Interpret the Decimal Number Line

Students identify decimals along the number line and record them as tenths or hundredths.

Additional Tips:

  1. Encourage students to use place value language when renaming decimals. For example, 0.3 is 3 tenths or 30 hundredths.
  2. For students who need extra support, provide a quick review of decimals with a place value chart, focusing on the tenths and hundredths columns.
  3. Use the completed worksheet as a discussion tool—ask students to explain how they arrived at their answers and how they determined equivalence.

Extension Ideas:

  1. Decimal Challenge: Challenge students to create their own shaded grids or number line problems, then exchange them with a partner to solve.
  2. Renaming Decimals: Provide a blank place value chart and ask students to write a variety of decimals in the correct columns, then rename them as tenths and hundredths.
  3. Real World-Decimals: Use real-world contexts, such as money or measurements, to further reinforce decimal concepts. For example, $0.25 is 25 hundredths of a dollar.
