Rhyme Odd One Out Activity
Description
Our Rhyme Odd One Out task cards are a fun and engaging phonics activity designed to help students strengthen their understanding of rhyme and word families. By identifying the word or image that does not rhyme within a group, students develop phonemic awareness, critical thinking, and auditory discrimination skills. This resource is perfect for both independent and small-group activities, fostering active learning in early literacy.
How to Complete
- Print the Rhyme Odd One Out task cards on thick card and cut out. Provide students with pegs, counters, or a suitable alternative to mark the task cards.
- Hand out a task card to each student or group. Ask students to say each word or describe the image on the task card aloud. Encourage them to identify which word or image does not rhyme with the others. Once the ‘odd one out’ is identified students will mark it with a peg or counter. Encourage students to discuss their choices and reasoning.
Additional Tips
- We recommend printing the included answer page for teacher reference.
- Begin by modelling how to identify rhyming words. Emphasise listening to ending sounds.
- Have students work in pairs or groups to promote discussion and reasoning.
- For learners who require additional support, provide visual aids or emphasise oral repetition of words.
Extension Ideas
- Rhyme and Write: After identifying the odd one out, challenge students to write down other words that rhyme with the remaining words.
- Create Your Own: Encourage students to create their own ‘Odd One Out’ cards by drawing or writing rhyming words and one non-rhyming word.
- Story Time: Use the rhyming words on the cards to create short stories or poems.
- Rhyme Hunt: Once the activity is complete, have students look around the classroom to find objects or pictures that rhyme with the correct words on the card.
This activity is ideal for introducing or reinforcing rhyming concepts in a hands-on, interactive way. With colourful images and adaptable formats, the Rhyme Odd One Out task cards are a must-have for your early literacy toolkit.
