Our Roll & Read the Words resource is an engaging activity that builds fluency and confidence in reading high frequency words. By rolling a die and reading words from the corresponding column, students will reinforce automatic recognition in a fun and dynamic way. As this resource is editable, you can adapt the words lists on the activity mats to suit your students’ needs.

How to Complete

1. Print the activity mats on thick cardstock and place in write-and-wipe sleeves. Provide dry-erase markers for students to tick off the words. Alternatively, use counters or play dough.
2. Students will take turns rolling a die. Based on the number rolled, they find the corresponding column and read one of the words aloud. If the word is read correctly, they check it off the list.
3. The activity continues until all words in a column or on the board are checked off.

Additional Tips

1. Provide support by reading the words together before starting the game.
2. Use a timer to add an element of challenge, encouraging fluency.
3. Use our editable documents to include words that your students are currently learning.

Extension Ideas

1. Sentence Building: Have students use the words they read in a sentence for added comprehension practise.
2. Spelling Practise: After reading, students write the word on a separate sheet to reinforce spelling.
3. Competitive Play: Make it a race! The first student to complete a full column or the board wins.
