This hands-on Christmas-themed resource has been designed to accompany a whole class reading of the picture book Santa Post by Emma Yarlett. Making crunchy coal with your class is a fun Christmas activity that is ideal to be given as a gift to students’ families or enjoyed on the spot!

Your students will love following a recipe to make delicious lumps of crunchy coal with cute faces, just like those in the story! You can have students make the crunchy coal at school, or send the recipe home for them to make with their families. Either way, this task is sure to be a hit!

This delicious recipe produces 12 large servings of crunchy coal; however, by using small patty pans or mini muffin baking trays, you can make up to 24 small lumps of crunchy coal. Check allergens and dietary requirements before completing this activity.

This resource includes a recipe with all required ingredients and equipment and a detailed procedure to follow. We have provided templates for your students to write or draw the recipe themselves which is sure to make a wonderful keepsake! Each template has 18mm and 24mm line width options. In addition, we have included a page of adorable gift tags for students who will be giving their crunchy coal as a special Christmas gift.

Early Years and Foundation students may benefit from having this resource enlarged to A3 to provide more space for drawing and writing.
