These mystery-themed worksheets are an engaging way for your students to practise the scanning reading strategy. Your students are presented with the fun task of becoming ‘professional scanners’. Each worksheet contains a short text. First, the students are challenged to scan the text to find three specific details within a time limit. Next, they need to decide whether the text would be relevant when trying to find out certain information. For the final task, the students write questions for a fellow professional scanner based on a text of their choice and then time how long it takes them to find the answers. Three versions of the worksheet are available. The amount of text and level of vocabulary increases slightly with each version. You could use them for differentiation or as a set of worksheets to practise scanning and the techniques involved. When you have decided which version of the worksheets to give to which students, you can print them, grab some timers and start the activity.
