This resource provides the opportunity for students to explore typical features of fairy tales, such as the characters, settings, plot and morals of the story.

A castle template is provided, as well as 12 characters that are typically seen in fairy tales. The characters included are a princess, prince, knight, dragon, horse, troll, witch, fairy, giant, wolf, a boy and a girl. These can be used to retell familiar fairy tale stories, construct new fairy tales, and prompt discussion about the moral of the story in familiar fairy tales.

This resource can be printed in colour or in black and white so that students can design and decorate it themselves. We recommend printing this craftivity on cardstock for durability.

To construct this resource:

1. Print one castle and set of characters for each student or group.
2. Colour and decorate (if printed in black and white), then cut out the castle and characters. You may prefer to pre-cut the doors of the castle using a craft knife.
3. Construct the castle by adding glue to one tab from the rectangular wall piece to the side of one of the castle towers. Wrap the piece around the back, then glue the other tab to the other side of the castle. Make sure the brick pattern is on the outside.
4. Construct the characters by wrapping the rectangular base piece around and gluing the tab to the opposite side.
