Significant Scenes From Stories of the Stolen Generations Craftivity
Description
First Nations Australians are advised that this task is based on stories of the Stolen Generations.
Help your students to develop their understanding of the Stolen Generations and comprehension skills with the Significant Scenes From Stories of the Stolen Generations Craftivity task, which they will complete following the reading of a story, such as ‘Stolen Girl’ by Trina Saffioti, ‘Took the Children Away’ by Archie Roach or ‘The Burnt Stick’ by Anthony Hill.
To complete the activity, students will choose significant scenes from a story about the Stolen Generations. For example, in ‘The Burnt Stick’, significant scenes include when John Jagamarra is taken from his mother and when he returns to the camp to look for his family with his own son.
Students will illustrate their chosen scenes and write a description of what makes them significant. They will cut out the scenes, glue them together, thread them through the slits in the window pane and pull them through to reveal each image one at a time.
We recommend that you print the window page on cardstock and use a craft knife to create slits along the dotted lines on the window before distributing the page to your students.
A single-scene worksheet version of this resource, that does not require cutting, has been included as an alternative.
If you require alternate texts related to the Stolen Generations, see the list below.
