Somebody’s Land: My Home Reflection Activity is a thoughtful worksheet designed to deepen students’ understanding of belonging, identity and connection to place. Inspired by the powerful themes of Somebody’s Land by Adam Goodes, Ellie Laing and David Hardy, this activity gives students an opportunity to express what home means to them, while acknowledging that their homes are built on land that has belonged to others for thousands of years.
As students illustrate and write about the people, places and emotions that define their personal concept of home, they’ll develop emotional literacy and a greater sense of empathy. This task also provides a meaningful way to open classroom discussions about First Nations perspectives and the importance of Country in shaping identity and community.

Materials Needed:
- Printed student templates
- Pencils, markers or paints for drawing
- Photographs of home (optional, for reference)
- Class copy of Somebody’s Land
How to Use:
- Begin by reading Somebody’s Land as a class, discussing the themes of Country, home and land use today
- Introduce the task by brainstorming what makes a home special—people, places, feelings and features
- Students draw a detailed picture of their home, including the environment and people around it
- Using the lined version, students respond to the sentence prompt in their own words
- Encourage students to reflect on the traditional custodians of the land their home is on
