Description

Sound Posters are engaging and informative tools designed to support Year 2 students as they explore the science of sound. These vibrant posters visually represent key concepts, including how sound is made through vibrations and the many sources of sound in our daily environment. With clear visuals and accessible language, they make abstract scientific ideas concrete and age-appropriate for young learners.

The set includes two posters: How is Sound Made? and Where Does Sound Come From?. The first poster introduces the concept that sound is created by vibrations, offering a visual scaffold to help students connect cause and effect. The second poster features a variety of real-world sound sources, such as animals, musical instruments and machines, supporting students in recognising how sounds vary across different settings. Together, these posters spark curiosity, promote discussion and help students form connections between everyday experiences and scientific explanations.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Understand that sound is produced by vibrations
  • ✅ Identify different sources of sound in the environment
  • ✅ Use visual supports to describe how sound travels and how we hear it
  • ✅ Build vocabulary related to sound, vibrations and science inquiry
  • ✅ Develop observation and explanation skills through guided exploration

What’s Included:

  • “How is Sound Made?” poster explaining sound production through vibrations
  • “Where Does Sound Come From?” poster illustrating various sound sources
  • Bright, engaging illustrations with student-friendly explanations
  • Colourful format suitable for whole-class display or small group reference

Materials Needed:

  • Printed posters on paper or cardstock
  • Whiteboard, bulletin board or science wall for display
  • Optional: Materials for hands-on sound demonstrations (e.g. rubber bands, tuning forks, balloons)

How to Use:

  • Display both posters during your sound and vibrations unit as anchor visuals
  • Use “How is Sound Made?” to introduce and explain vibrations as the cause of sound
  • Refer to “Where Does Sound Come From?” during class discussions about everyday sound sources
  • Connect students’ personal experiences to the poster visuals through guided questioning
  • Reinforce key concepts with hands-on demonstrations that show how sound is created and travels

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use as a reference during science lessons, small group investigations or writing tasks
  • 💡 Invite students to list or draw sounds they hear in different settings and match them to poster categories
  • 💡 Combine with experiments using common objects to investigate vibration and sound production
  • 💡 Ask students to use the posters as a prompt for explaining how sound works in their own words

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Let students personalise their learning by creating mini versions of the posters for their science books
  • 💛 Select vocabulary terms like “vibration,” “sound wave” and “source” from the posters to reinforce scientific language
  • 💛 Send a family task encouraging students to observe and record sounds in their home or neighbourhood using poster themes

Sound Posters provide a clear, engaging and versatile way to support your students’ understanding of how sound is made and where it comes from. With vibrant visuals, relatable content and multiple classroom applications, this resource makes science learning exciting and accessible while promoting inquiry and observation skills that extend beyond the classroom.
