Use this PowerPoint activity to help your students practise manipulating phonemes in CVC, CCVC and CVCC words. They will need to add, delete or substitute one phoneme to make each new word.

How to play: As a whole class, give each child a mini whiteboard, pen and rubber. Display the first slide with the starting picture. All children write the first word on their whiteboard (tin). Reveal the next slide, the first word has been added to the train carriage (children can check and edit their spelling if needed) and a new picture has appeared up the top. Children must rub out one phoneme, add one phoneme or swap one phoneme to change their existing word (tin) into the new word to match the picture (fin). Reveal the next slide and repeat. The final slide will applaud (sound on) the class and say, Well Done!

*Optional – You may wish to play one game each day as a phonics warm up or play several games as a mat session.

You could also use this in small group intervention, for students who require further skill practise.
