Description
Spin & Solve is a hands-on way for students to practise solving subtraction problems within 40. By spinning two number spinners, students generate their own subtraction problems, reinforcing their understanding of basic operations, number relationships, and problem-solving skills.
How to Complete
- Print the spinner mats on thick cardstock for durability. Provide students with a recording sheet and spinner (or a paperclip and pencil to act as a spinner).
- Students spin each spinner to generate two numbers. Please note that the subtraction problems generated will either include double digits or a combination of double and single digits.
- Using these numbers, students will create a subtraction problem that can be solved using mental strategies or physical manipulatives, such as ten frames and counters.
- Students can write their solved subtraction number sentences on the provided recording sheet.
Additional Tips
- Use ten frames and counters, number lines, or base ten blocks for visual learners to represent the problems.
Extension Ideas
- Name the Strategy: Have students solve problems using a set strategy or a strategy of their choice. Encourage them to explain their working out process to promote mathematical reasoning.
- Word Problems: Extend students’ understanding of subtraction by having them create word problems for the numbers they spin.
