The State & Territory Travel Information Cards are a fun way for students to look at and compare the distances between states and territories in Australia, encouraging students to use the inquiry process to decide which modes of transport are the most appropriate. This resource includes eight sets of State & Territory Travel Information Cards (you only need to print the set for the state or territory that you live in). Each card shows the distance in kilometres between different states or territories and how long it will take to get there by walking, cycling, driving a car, or flying by plane. Split the class into seven groups and allocate them a different state or territory with an information card to go with it. Have the students to read their information card and discuss in their groups the best and most efficient modes of transport they could use to get to their allocated state or territory and why? Students may present their findings to the class as a group then take turns to explain why each mode of transport is suitable or not, then justify their answers with their research. Encourage the audience to ask questions and challenge their decisions. This activity is part of our Geography Year 2 Unit Plan.
