Additional Tips:

  1. Begin by showing students how to recognise small groups without counting. For example, use manipulatives to make small collections. Cover the collection with a piece of paper and reveal it for a brief moment, asking students to share how many they saw. By starting with very small collections of 2 or 3, students will build confidence in subitising rather than counting the collection one-by-one.
  2. Encourage students to justify their choices aloud.

Extension Ideas:
