Description

Identify appropriate subordinate conjunctions to link independent and dependent clauses of complex sentences with this sorting activity.

Students will sort 30 sentences into six groups based on the chosen subordinating conjunctions:

after
although
because
if
to
while.

Each time students sort a sentence card, they can record their answers using one of two recording sheets. The first is a double-sided page with 15 spaces on each side, having students write out the entire sentence, and the second fits on half an A4 page with students writing only the corresponding conjunction.

Print the instructions, conjunction cards and sentence cards on thick paper for added durability. Print recording sheets double-sided or utilise write and wipe sleeves and have students reuse them during small group activities.
