Reinforce, consolidate and assess student understanding of past, present and future tense using this narrative writing exercise.

In this activity, students plan, draft, edit and write a 1-2 paragraph narrative in each of the tenses, using tense-specific verbs as needed. You can customise this task in a variety of ways to suit your students and context:

1. Each student completes three different narratives, one for each tense;
2. Each student completes the same narrative, rewritten into each of the three tenses;
3. Students are randomly given one of the three tenses and write one narrative;
4. Students are divided into groups of three and write a narrative together, with each student responsible for converting it into one of the tenses;
5. Students write a narrative in one tense and pass it on to another student, who has to rewrite it in a different tense.

Included in this download are planning documents for all three tenses, including individual planning and drafting sheets for each tense. We’ve also included sheets to use for final copies, including fully lined and half-lined with space to draw an illustration.
