Description

Build number recognition and visual subitising skills with Tens Frame Memory Match, a versatile card-based game designed to support early numeracy learners. This simple yet engaging activity invites students to pair numerals with their matching tens frame representation.

With numbers ranging from 0 to 10, Tens Frame Memory Match helps reinforce the concept of quantity using ten-frame visuals alongside traditional numerals. It’s ideal for classroom practice, small group games, or hands-on learning centres where students can independently explore foundational number concepts.

This resource is perfect for reinforcing counting, developing one-to-one correspondence, and introducing part-part-whole thinking. Whether used as a matching task, memory game, or in a fast-paced round of snap, the possibilities for fun and repetition are endless!

Key Learning Outcomes:

How to Use:

  1. Print and cut the cards, ensuring you have matching pairs of numerals and tens frames from 0 to 10.
  2. Introduce the concept of matching quantities to numerals using a class demonstration.
  3. Use the cards in a classic memory match format – lay all cards face down and take turns flipping two at a time to find a match.
  4. Play snap by shuffling the deck and turning cards over one at a time – players shout "snap!" when a match appears.
  5. Sort the cards into two groups (numerals and frames) and ask students to find and link the correct pairs independently.
  6. Use as a fast finisher activity, independent learning task, or small group warm-up before maths instruction.

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use in maths rotations for independent or partner activities
  • 💡 Add to your numeracy trolleys for ongoing revision and play-based learning
  • 💡 Create a matching race – time students as they match pairs correctly
  • 💡 Combine with physical tens frame mats and counters for tactile matching practice
  • 💡 Integrate with storytelling – e.g. “The monster found 7 apples!” – then find the card that shows 7

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Print on coloured paper or card stock to differentiate levels or to group sets by classroom station
  • 💛 Store in labelled envelopes or containers for easy distribution and cleanup
  • 💛 Laminate for long-term use and sanitising between sessions
