Description

This editable Mother’s Day craft is a perfect activity for students to show appreciation for their mum, mother figure or special person in a hands-on and meaningful way. Inspired by the book My Mum’s the Best by Rosie Smith and Bruce Whatley, this craft allows children to personalise a trophy to honour their mum. Students will add a drawing or photo of their mum, decorate their trophy and attach a heartfelt sentence or paragraph about why their mum is the best, making it a keepsake that can be cherished for years to come.

How to Complete

This versatile Mother’s Day resource includes both a ready-to-use version and one that can be cut out and assembled. The editable text means you can change the text to suit the needs of your class. The writing templates are available in 24mm, 18mm and 14mm line widths.
  1. Choose a version of the task and a line size option. Print on thick coloured or white card. If printing on white card, have students colour or paint the trophy template before cutting it out. Use yellow or gold paint if available.
  2. Students can add a photo or drawing of their mum to their trophy.
  3. They can decorate the trophy template using craft items, such as streamers, ribbon, glitter, sequins and gems.
  4. Have students complete the writing template, stating reasons why their mum is the best.
  5. Depending on the selected version, attach the writing template to the trophy.

Additional Tips

  1. Read My Mum’s the Best to begin generating ideas about why mums are amazing.
  2. Provide sentence starters to help students complete the writing template. Sentence starters could include “My mum is the best because she always…”, “I love when my mum…”, or “My mum makes me happy when she…”.
  3. For younger students, scribe their responses where required.
  4. Ask students’ mums, mother figures or special people to send in photos to add to the trophies.
  5. Provide students with colourful streamers or ribbons to attach to the trophy handles.
  6. Have students use glitter glue to decorate the text. Add gems and sequins for extra sparkly trophies.

Extension Ideas

  1. Trophy Ceremony: Host a ‘Best Mum Award Ceremony’ where students can present their trophies and the reasons why they are being awarded.
  2. Classroom Display: Create a display of the completed crafts to celebrate all the amazing mums. Be sure to hang one of our Mother’s Day banners alongside the trophies to make your display extra special!

This fun and low-prep craft is a wonderful way to celebrate Mother’s Day, reinforcing writing skills, and encouraging students to express gratitude in a creative and meaningful way.
