This purposeful activity has been designed to accompany a whole class reading of the picture book The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. These no-prep comprehension worksheets will allow you to check your students’ ability to make meaningful connections with the story based on their prior knowledge and text clues. These connections are so important because they enable students to make sense of what they are reading.

If students are focusing on text to self connections, have them consider what personal connections they have to the characters, settings or events in the story. If focusing on text to text connections, have students consider what fiction or non-fiction books, films and television shows the text reminds them of. If focusing on text to world connections, have students consider what real world places, people, animals, events or issues spark a connection. We have included multiple options to suit the needs of your class, including:

1. Drawing text to self, text to text and text to world connections.
2. Drawing and describing text to self, text to text and text to world connections.
3. Describing text to self, text to text and text to world connections.
4. Completing a Venn diagram, focusing on text to self connections.
5. Completing a Venn diagram, focusing on text to text connections.
6. Completing a Venn diagram, focusing on text to world connections.
7. In addition, we have also included a blank Venn diagram.

Early Years and Foundation students may benefit from having this resource enlarged to A3 to provide more space for drawing and writing.
