Our The Peasant Prince Postcard resource is based on the picture book, The Peasant Prince by Li Cunxin and provides students with the opportunity to infer what the main character might write in a postcard to his family, his former teacher or another character from the story.

We have included three postcard templates:

• Version 1 is a postcard to be sent from Beijing to Li’s parents.
• Version 2 is a postcard to be sent from Houston to Teacher Song, the teacher from Li’s Qingdao school who nominated him to the government officials.
• Version 3 is a blank postcard that can be sent from any location to any character.

Encourage your students to imagine how Li would be feeling and what he would be doing when he writes the postcard. For example, one student might imagine they are Li soon after arriving in Beijing and be feeling very overwhelmed and homesick. Alternatively, another student could imagine they are Li after he has been at the Beijing Dance Academy for several years and be writing about his progress as a dancer and the influential people he has interacted with, such as Teacher Xiao and Ben.

Once students have finished writing their messages that reflect the events, characters and settings of the text, they may decorate the cover of the postcard with relevant images.

We have included A4 and A5 versions of this resource. The A5 version can be folded and glued back-to-back.
