The Pigeon Has to Go to School: Pigeon’s Backpack Craft

Description
Students will love creating their very own Pigeon sitting in a school backpack! This creative craft is ideal to be completed at the start of the school year after reading the story The Pigeon Has to Go to School by Mo Willems.
Using the included templates, each student will create a backpack with a pocket that holds a very panicked Pigeon! To create the backpack, they will simply cut and glue the pocket to the front of the backpack template. To create Pigeon, students will cut and glue the pieces together before adorning Pigeon’s wings with light blue feathers. To suit the needs of your class, we have included both cut and paste and ready-to-go templates. In addition to the printable templates, this resource includes detailed instructions with an example and an eye-catching banner. Use the banner to create a beautiful display of your students’ completed crafts.
Please note that to complete the craft, students will require access to blue feathers, scissors and craft glue. Printing the templates on thick cardstock is recommended. Younger students may benefit from having the templates enlarged to A3 and will require assistance with the cutting and assembling of their crafts. To add colour, either print the templates on coloured cardstock or provide time for students to paint them with colours of their choice.
Top Teacher Tips:
- To create a moveable craft, use split pins instead of glue to attach Pigeon’s wings.
- If you want to turn Pigeon into a puppet, add a pop stick to the bottom of his body.
- To emphasise Pigeon’s panic about going to school, have students add loose feathers around the backpack (if creating a display of the completed crafts, scatter feathers around your bulletin board as well!).
It is time for Pigeon to go to school!
