Millimetres, Centimetres, Metres or Kilometres? LET’S FARM
Description
Let’s Farm – Millimetres, Centimetres, Metres or Kilometres?
Grab your boots and head down to the farm for a fun and interactive measurement adventure! In this game-based activity, students complete different farm jobs by choosing the correct unit of measurement for various items and distances.
As they work their way through the farm, students will be asked to decide whether an object or distance should be measured in millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), metres (m), or kilometres (km). With every correct answer, they complete a new task—whether it’s fixing a fence, planting vegetables, or harvesting crops.
The game continues until all tasks are finished. At the end, students receive a summary page that shows everything they completed on the farm, offering a fun recap of their hard work and learning!
Key Learning Outcomes:
- ✅ Identify and apply appropriate metric units to measure different lengths and distances
- ✅ Distinguish between millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres based on scale
- ✅ Build confidence in real-world application of measurement units
- ✅ Strengthen visual reasoning and mathematical language
- ✅ Engage in interactive, goal-oriented learning through play
How to Play:
- Students are shown an object or distance and asked which unit of measurement is most suitable—mm, cm, m or km.
- A correct answer completes part of a farm task.
- Some larger farm jobs require more than one question to complete, helping build excitement and momentum.
- The game continues until all questions are answered and tasks are finished.
- At the end, students see a summary of all the farm jobs they completed during the game.
Ideas for Classroom Use:
- 💡 Use during your measurement unit to reinforce when and how different metric units are used
- 💡 Ideal for Years 2–4 working on recognising scale and measurement vocabulary
- 💡 Incorporate into maths rotations or use as an engaging whole-class warm-up
- 💡 Pair with real-life classroom measuring activities for hands-on follow-up
Top Teacher Tips:
- 💛 Let students personalise their experience by choosing from six characters before the game begins
- 💛 Select the number of players or teams at the start to suit individual, paired or group play
- 💛 Send the QR code home to support measurement learning beyond the classroom
Let’s Farm – Millimetres, Centimetres, Metres or Kilometres? brings metric measurement to life through meaningful tasks, interactive visuals and a hands-on farm theme that students will love!
