Description

Use this activity to help your students practise identifying and ordering the letters in their names whilst also developing their fine motor skills. Each student is sure to be engaged as they identify the items of clothing that feature the letters in their name and put them in order.

This resource includes a ready to print set of alphabet letters featured on a variety of clothing items and an editable document where you can type your students’ names in a font style, size and colour of your choice! Simply print the letter cards on thick cardstock, cut out and they are ready to be used.

To complete the task, students will need to identify and sort the letter cards to show the correct spelling of their names. Store the letter cards in snap lock bags and use this resource repeatedly until your students are confident in ordering the letters of their names.

The fine motor aspect of this task fits perfectly with the washing day theme! To create a ‘washing line’, simply cut lengths of string and tie the ends to poles, such as the legs of a table or between two chairs. Provide pegs for students to peg the letters of their name in order along the washing line. As students repeatedly squeeze the ends of the pegs, they are strengthening the small muscles in their hands, fingers and thumbs. The action of pegging the letter cards to the washing line also helps to develop their bilateral and hand-eye coordination skills.

To support students, we recommend providing a visual prompt of the students’ name written on a card or whiteboard. To extend students, once they have ordered the letters of their name, have them practise writing the letters on paper or a whiteboard. For an additional challenge, have students locate their name’s letters from a pile of assorted letters before ordering them!

Looking to use this versatile resource in other ways? Print each letter of the alphabet and have students practise putting them in order. Alliteratively, have students use the letters to create CVC or high frequency words.

This resource is available in our basic fun font and all Australian state fonts, as well as en editable version.
