Description

Science is a great subject to encourage students to move outside and explore their environments. A unit of work on the weather (within the Earth and Space science strand) is just perfect for this.

Use this resource to create a set of themed binoculars, and spend some time outside exploring the weather.

A range of templates have been provided to create your own binoculars, or why not use some decorated craft rolls instead? Once the observations have been made encourage your students to record their findings using the included templates.  

This experience and activity will also help to support your students build their weather journaling / language skills.

Why not try this?

Find a shady spot for students to lay outdoors, and pose the questions:

  • How can you use your five senses to explore the weather?
  • What can you see?
  • Now close your eyes... what can you feel that is related to the weather?
  • What can you smell?
  • What can you hear that is weather related?

Often the language and ideas that come from an activity like this are fantastic anecdotal notes to keep for assessment purposes.
