Description

Support your Foundation students in their Chemical Sciences: Investigating Materials unit of work with this investigation that will get your students excited to learn about materials and their properties.

Created to coincide with the Foundation Chemical Sciences Australian Curriculum, this investigation will provide students with the opportunity to test the flexibility of materials. Using the weaving template, students will see how easily they are able to weave materials through the slits. The worksheets within this resource include:

  1. Prediction
  2. Observations
  3. Results
  4. Conclusion
  5. Testing materials weaving template.

This resource includes detailed instructions and a list of materials required to complete the task. We have included two versions: one with the names of materials (wood, plastic, fabric, metal) and one with the names of specific objects (skewer, straw, ribbon, foil). Simply print the version that you prefer. Students will need access to objects made from:

  1. Wood: such as skewers or pop sticks.
  2. Plastic: such as straws, strips of snap lock bags or cling wrap.
  3. Fabric: such as ribbon or strips of material.
  4. Metal: such as strips of aluminium foil or child-safe wire.

Please note that the weaving template needs to be cut prior to the lesson. We recommend printing on card for durability and using a craft knife to make the slits for students to weave the materials through. You may wish to enlarge the template to A3.

This resource is a part of our Chemical Sciences Foundation UNIT PLAN.
