Celebrate Mother’s Day with this adorable Wild About You Kangaroo craft! This engaging, hands-on activity encourages students to express their love and appreciation for their mums, mother figures or special people by creating a heartfelt kangaroo craft with a pouch filled with reasons why they are ‘wild’ about their mum. This craft can be used following a reading of the book Wild About Mums by Philip Bunting, making it a perfect literacy and art integration.   How to Complete This versatile Mother’s Day resource includes both a ready-to-use version and one that can be cut out and assembled.

1. Read Wild About Mums by Philip Bunting before starting the activity to provide inspiration and engagement.
2. Select the preferred template and print on thick white or coloured cardstock. If printing on white, allow students to colour or paint the kangaroo pieces.
3. Students will cut out the kangaroo and attach the pouch, ensuring it remains open at the top.
4. They will write reasons why they are ‘wild’ about their mum, mother figure or special person on the joey writing strips and place them inside the kangaroo’s pouch. Older students can be encouraged to write sentences or phrases, while younger students can write key words or draw pictures.
5. Create a display of the completed crafts using one of our Mother’s Day banners or give the crafts as a thoughtful Mother’s Day gift!

  Additional Tips

1. Younger students may benefit from enlarging the craft templates to A3.
2. Allow students to add decorations to their kangaroos, such as pom pom noses and googly eyes.
3. Back the completed crafts on coloured card for a pop of colour.
4. As an alternative to the writing strips, attach the included joey faces to pop sticks and write the reasons directly on them or use them as puppets to promote oral language.
