Help your students discover how simple it is to expand their vocabulary with our Word Building Cloze worksheets. This resource requires students to use their knowledge of known and base words to spell new words.

Each missing word from the passage has a base-word clue, which can be built upon with prefixes and suffixes. Two versions of this task have been included to cater for the range of abilities in your class:

• The first version of the two worksheets includes a word bank of all missing words, which can be ticked off as they are applied to the passage.
• The second version of the two worksheets includes a bank of prefixes and suffixes and will require students to use context clues, vocabulary knowledge and word-building skills to determine the missing words.

We recommend that you remind your students the spelling of the base word may change when they add an affix to it. For example, to create the word ‘adventurous’ from the base word ‘adventure’, we drop the e before adding -ous.
