Description

Celebrate World Environment Day with this beautiful craft that features animals decorated with leaves collected from the local environment.Students will collect leaves of different colours and shapes to apply them to a template featuring an animal in its habitat. In addition to detailed instructions, this resource includes a variety of animal templates, including a cut-and-paste option, a ready-to-go worksheet version and a blank template to which students can add their own designs. The animal templates featured within the resource include:
  1. Fish: students add leaves to give the fish some scales
  2. Owl: students add leaves to give the owl some feathers
  3. Lion: students add leaves to give the lion a mane
  4. Echidna: students add leaves to give the echidna some spines.
We recommend that the templates be enlarged to A3. Students add colour to their template with art supplies, such as crayons, edicol dye or paint. Alternatively, the backing template can be printed on coloured cardstock. Additionally, students can decorate the remainder of their artwork with other items from nature (such as flowers, petals, sticks or grass) or craft items (such as sequins, pipe cleaners, cotton wool or cellophane). Before completing this activity, have students consider the importance of protecting the environment, especially for the animals living in it. To encourage meaningful discussion, pose questions related to animals that live in different habitats across the world (such as those that live in tropical oceans, African savannahs or the Australian bush), what the animals need to survive in their habitats and what could happen if their habitats were polluted or cleared etc.If you wish to display your students’ completed art pieces, we recommend printing our World Environment Day banner or poster to hang alongside them. Both of these can be found in our World Environment Day Display PACKAGE.Students will love using their imaginations to create beautiful World Environment Day art pieces!Be sure to check out our other amazing World Environment Day resources that are suitable for young learners!
