Description

This engaging Mother’s Day activity has been designed to be completed after a whole class reading of My Mum’s the Best by Rosie Smith and Bruce Whatley. Students will be encouraged to consider the reasons why their mum, mother figure or special person is the best as they complete the certificate template with drawings or persuasive sentences outlining their reasons. The completed certificates would make an ideal low-prep Mother’s Day gift!   How to Complete This versatile Mother’s Day resource includes both a ready-to-use and an editable version, meaning you can change the text to suit the needs of your class.
  1. In the ribbon at the top, students will draw a picture of their mum, mother figure or special person.
  2. Below the picture, students will record three reasons why their mum has earned the title of World’s Best Mum! Encourage students to think about what makes their mum special, her kindness, the fun things she does, or the ways she cares for them.
  Additional Tips
  1. Read My Mum’s the Best by Rosie Smith and Bruce Whatley to introduce the activity and begin generating ideas.
  2. If needed, provide sentence starters or a brainstorming session to help students generate ideas about why their mum is the best.
  3. For younger students, scribe their responses where required.
  4. Encourage students to use descriptive and persuasive words to enhance their writing.
  5. Choose between the certificate templates with blank boxes for drawing or those with 18mm or 14mm line widths for writing. If additional space is required, enlarge the template to A3.
  Extension Ideas
  1. Make It a Gift: Back the completed poster to onto a piece of coloured card to create a thoughtful low-prep Mother’s Day gift.
  2. Classroom Display: Create a World’s Best Mums wall of students’ work to celebrate all the amazing mums. Be sure to hang one of our Mother’s Day banners alongside the certificates to make your display extra special!
This simple, yet meaningful activity is a great way for students to practise writing and drawing while creating a cherished gift for their mum!   This resource is part of our My Mum’s the Best Mini Book Package. Be sure to check out our other amazing Mother’s Day resources!
